Any successful idea begins with a cohesive vision. Though ours continues to evolve and improve with the new ideas of others who are interested in the project, the concept remains simple.
The mission of the Sovereign Village Project is to create a simple and replicable model of a functional rural community based on a common set of values that include self-sufficiency, sustainability, independence, and resilience. We envision a group of families and individuals working together to become wholly responsible for their food, income, education, healthcare, energy, transportation, governance, and other needs. The entirety of the property will be subdivided and designed around permaculture principles and ethics.
This community will not follow the failed models of "Communes" or attempted Utopian experiments. Individual homesteads will be privately owned, and centered around a single community-owned area. The community-owned portion of the property will be kept very simple and managed/governed much like a small church, non-profit school, or grange hall. It will consist of a small building used as a gathering space, educational co-op, library, internet access, printer, farm stand, and business center. The common area will also include an outdoor gathering space and food forest to be used for community festivals, market days, outdoor education, and more. This space will not only serve the immediate community, but also invite outside capital into the community by hosting agri-tourism, self-sufficiency/permaculture classes and demonstrations, and small festivals centered around the homesteading lifestyle.
This will help the residents of the community as they work towards economic self-sufficiency. As the families and individuals build their homesteads and skills, they can create businesses and properties that drive revenue to themselves in the form of services, agri-tourism, farm products, teaching opportunities, short-term rentals/camps, and more. We want to break the model of giving our labor and time to outside corporations, and help people work towards working from home and spending their time building healthy families and lives.
